Deafblindness and auditory localization: a new clinical tool

Are you looking for a validated tool to assess the auditory localization abilities of individuals with deafblindness?

Watch or rewatch the recorded presentation by Julie Dufour and Dr. Tony Leroux from Spring 2024. In this video, they present the clinical tool they developed and validated through various research projects, designed for professionals working with individuals who are deafblind.

This tool is simple and cost-effective, created to evaluate the quality of auditory localization in people with dual sensory impairment. Auditory localization is an essential skill for ensuring safe, independent mobility for this population.

The audiologist can assess auditory localization to the precise degree in collaboration with an orientation and mobility specialist (O&M), using standard equipment available in most audiology services.

Julie Dufour is an audiologist with the joint deafblindness program of IRD-INLB at CCSMTL – CRDP Raymond-Dewar and CISSS de la Montérégie-Centre – Institut Nazareth et Louis-Braille, as well as a clinical member of IURDPM-CRIR. Tony Leroux, Ph.D., is an audiologist, full professor at the University of Montreal, and associate researcher at CRIR.
